Carlos Elmer has been a photographer for ARIZONA HIGHWAYS Magazine since 1940. He grew up in Kingman, Arizona, next door to "Grand Canyon Country", and the Canyon has been his favorite subject.

Published in 1984, the book is a rare publication. The book is a blend of stunning photography and informative text, designed to educate visitors and readers about the park's history, geology, and ecology. It goes beyond a simple travel guide by delving into the scientific and cultural forces that shaped the Grand Canyon. Key topics covered include:

  • Scenic Photography: The book is primarily a collection of full-color photographs of the Grand Canyon and its natural wonders.
  • Narrative Explanation: Elmer provides a narrative that accompanies the photos, offering explanations of the sites and monuments.
  • Exploration of the "Grand Canyon Country": While it includes views from the popular South Rim, the book also highlights "seldom seen natural wonders hidden away within 'the grandest canyon of all.'" This suggests a broader exploration beyond the most well-known tourist spots.
  • Informative and Visual: It is designed to be a visual and informative guide, often including maps. Some versions were even given as complimentary copies to customers of Grand Canyon Airlines, underscoring its role as a travel and tourism publication.

It's possible that today the book existing is zero to none. You've been here for a moment of its life. And you may never return to see it; but at home on an evening while reclining in your favorite easy chair, when the spirit of adventure and the desire of wanderlust grips you. This is the Grand Canyon seen by ninety percent of its visitors-a board expanse of colorful minarets and buttes viewed from the South Rim near Grand Canyon Village.

So join us now, on an armchair tour to places, familiar or unknown, in this magical realm we call "Grand Canyon Country."
