Canada boasts the largest national park system in the world, a chain of reserves that protects the dedicate ecosystems of the north, the alpine reaches of the Rocky Mountains, and the lakes of the Canadian Shield. For grizzlies and polar bears, burrowing owls and piping plovers, these parks represent an essential refuge in an increasingly populated landscape. In the far north, Ivvavik National Park protects the birthing grounds of the world's largest caribou herd, while at Point Pelee, Canada's southernmost point of land, monarch butterflies rest on their annual migration.
For visitors, Canada's national parks represent extraordinary opportunities for outdoor recreation, from hiking and canoeing to cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. In fact, the wish to draw people to the outdoors helped lead to the creation of Banff, Canada's first national park, in 1885. Along with the protection of land, the country has also preserved a number of historic sites, commemorating events such as the North-West Rebellion, the first radio transmission, and the Klondike gold rush.
